Thunder Frequently Asked Questions
Does my player need to register for tryouts?
We do ask that parents fill out a quick online form with basic player information before attending tryouts. Players will check in prior to the tryouts. You can pre-register your player HERE.
There are two dates listed for tryouts – Should my player attend all of these?
If possible, it’s a great idea to make it out to all of your player’s age-appropriate events. Attending both sessions gives coaches a great opportunity to observe each player’s abilities and skills. We do understand that conflicts may arise. If you’re not able to attend all of the tryout activities, we suggest reaching out to the coaches in your son’s age group to give them a heads up along with requesting a waiver from the boys travel trustee. For families who will be out of town or unavailable during the entire tryout week, it may be possible to arrange a private tryout.
What can my son expect at tryouts?
Tryouts are structured to give players a chance to show their skills in fielding, throwing, catching, hitting, pitching, running and sliding. Coaches strive to be encouraging and positive during tryouts, even as they evaluate players and make decisions about how best to fill their rosters. We ask that players arrive dressed in baseball pants, cup, baseball hat, socks and a shirt–families have the opportunity to include information about a player’s prior team history on our registration form, if they choose.
Coaches will personally contact each player who attends tryouts within a week of the last tryout date, usually sooner.
How much does playing for Thunder cost?
The amount varies depending on the coach and level, but families can expect to pay between $700 – $1,000 for the year. This covers uniforms, equipment bags, tournament and league fees, and indoor training space during winter months. Many teams choose to do fundraisers to help offset these costs.
What is the time commitment for Thunder players?
Most teams start practice in the fall, maybe once per week. Over the winter months, practice and playing times vary–some teams practice indoors weekly. Thunder’s main playing season starts in the spring beginning around April, when players are able to get back outside. League play could include a couple of games a week, and there are many local and regional weekend tournament opportunities for our teams throughout the summer. Most teams wrap up in July.
